Great Massingham
S Mary
This beautifully proportioned tower still awaits two trebles to complete what would be a very tuneful ring of six. Taylors installed a new six bell frame in 1903 and recast the old ring of three, at the same time adding a new treble to make the present ring of four.
The church towers of the two Massinghams must have been a welcome sight for many returning aircrews particularly during the early years of WW2 when heavy losses were sustained by the Blenheim squadrons during low-level daylight bombing raids over Germany. Boston bombers followed the Blenheims including a free French unit (342 squadron). RAF Massingham closed in 1946 and today part of the site is used as a private airfield. (Roger Peckham)
