Watton Church

The round tower and middle nave date back to Saxon times but have been much restored. The upper or belfry stage is octagonal and into this small area enterprising bell hangers from Whitechapel somehow managed to shoehorn a pleasant ring of six which replaced a derelict ring of three. The bells were retuned and rehung by Whitechapel in 1974.

For railway lovers - the former Thetford to Swaffham railway line (GER) crossed the road a few hundred yards to the south of the church. Look for the gatekeepers cottage (which still survives albeit as a private residence) on the left just as you turn into Church Road. The line closed in 1965.  (Roger Peckham)
