Great Massingham

S Mary

GF

4, tenor 9-1-14 in G

Friday 19h30

This beautifully proportioned tower still awaits two trebles to complete what would be a very tuneful ring of six. Taylors installed a new six bell frame in 1903 and recast the old ring of three, at the same time adding a new treble to make the present ring of four.

The church towers of the two Massinghams must have been a welcome sight for many returning aircrews particularly during the early years of WW2 when heavy losses were sustained by the Blenheim squadrons during low-level daylight bombing raids over Germany. Boston bombers followed the Blenheims including a free French unit (342 squadron). RAF Massingham closed in 1946 and today part of the site is used as a private airfield. (Roger Peckham)

Hi there I was just having a look at the listing for Great Massingham there are some blanks in the data for us 1) as a point of interest Kennith Wolstehome the commentator for the 1966 world cup when we beat Germany, He was stationed at Gt Massingham 2) we have a total of 8 ringers at massingam 3) we ring for the Family service on Sundays but this varies from month to month its usually is the third but that’s not set in stone. Hope this info helps Regards Denys
